Campaign And Energize

Been reading about Sarah Palin and her extended family vacation/ bus tour.  Pretty enlightening to be truthful, at least insofar as seeing just how silly the media can be when they follow a story.    I don’t know for certain whether she is or isn’t going to run for President, but there are clues for the more inquisitive.  Let’s follow the easiest ones to find, and see how far down the rabbit hole we can get with them.

Where does she send people who want information about her bus tour?  SarahPac.  What shows up on her front page? The bus tour info.  What does it say the bus tour is about?  It says it’s a campaign for educating and energizing Americans about Americas founding principles, among other things.  Key words? Campaign and energize.

Click on the page titled “Join the commonsense conservative revolution” and you see a statement that makes it pretty plain, speaking of “ramping up our preparations for 2012.”  Add to that the news that she said she’d be visiting Iowa, after visiting New Hampshire.  Those two states, for those who don’t know, are the first two states with primaries, both happening in early January next year.

How else do you read that?  How many ways can you read those statements that make sense, given the current news?  Palin for President sounds more and more likely.  She’ll have to announce soon, so we’ll know one way or the other, within the next 5 or 6 weeks.  Not going to say definite, I’m not in her head, I don’t know.  I initially didn’t think she would at all, not even close, but the more I look the more I see a run happening.

A bus tour can be an exploratory committee if you want it to be, can it not?

Ya know, maybe I want to see it, see her run seeing the amount of coverage the “Neo-Con Mystery tour” is generating, and seeing how much of a polarizing force she would be in the upcoming Republican electoral process, how she would split the Republican party, and how much I like that thought.

I don’t know for sure though, whether I should even care about her running for President.  She would be a fringe candidate, who would realistically only appeal to about 20% of the electorate, the neo-conservative/ paleo-liberal/ tea party patriot right wingers.  She won’t and frankly can’t get the moderates, independents who are actually independent and not Republicans in sheep’s clothing, and anyone who isn’t a conspiracy theorist type.

Maybe it shows you something different.  I’m curious, so drop me a line here and tell me what you think.

If a nation values anything more than freedom, it will lose its freedom; and the irony of it is that if it is comfort or money that it values more, it will lose that too.

Viddy of the day:  The future of NASA’s space shuttle program.

Sad, really, to see the end of the shuttle program.  It bothers me that we’ve been using Russian spacecraft to get our people back and forth from the ISS. The future is bright though, with the Orion program getting the go-ahead, keeping an American presence in Manned spaceflight.

That’s it from here, America.  G’night.

Enemy Of The People

That’s me.  Enemy of the people.  I must be.  Why?  I watched and listened to the entire Sarah Palin “National tea party” speech.  Populism, conservative style, apparently doesn’t touch me the same way that liberal populism does.  Why?  Well, from what I saw, there were equal parts Ad hominem attacks that were just as untrue as they were giggle out loud stupid, and conservative republican talking points.  The same worn out crap the right has pulled, about Democrats making America less safe, when the right has no corner on the “We kept America safe” market.

Apparently she doesn’t remember 9/11.  Dummy.   And how many Americans were kept safe in Iraq?  Ask those honored war dead who died their, in a war that did nothing to slow down, stop or end terrorism, and made Al-Qaeda stronger, and gave Al-qaeda an effective marketing tool to make more people terrorists. Over 4,000 dead for a false vision of strength.

When we fight in Afghanistan, the war you on the right oppose, we fight Al-Qaeda, the enemy the neocons didn’t have the nerve to fight when Bush was in office.

There was talk about restarting the health care debate, this time with input from the right.  Surprising, seeing how there were parts of the bill that were suggested by republicans.  It’s not like they had no input, they did.  They had plenty of time to read the various bills, but she made the same old tired right wing main stream media claims about them not having any input.

She actually tried to co-opt left wing energy policy talking points by saying we need to get all types of energy production.  No crowds yelling “DRILL, BABY, DRILL”.  No talk of drilling offshore.  There was talk of more nuclear power, and she said it was nice that the Obama administration talked about it, but we need more than talk.

Indeed, we do.  From you AND him.  Mind you, from Sarah Palin ALL we get is talk, and talk is cheap and easy. She has no power, no responsibility, and therefor anything she says comes from the safety of the sideline.  The President talks from the vantage point of having the capacity to do something about what he says.  His words have meaning, consequence.  Sarah’s don’t. It’s that simple.

There was a lot of empty rhetoric, as would be expected from a meeting of neocons and their political cronies putting a fresh paint job on the conservative movement in America, with the hearty support of the right wing main stream media.

She did have some points to make, and she made them, but they were points that, to be honest didn’t touch me.  I’ve heard all the points she made before.  She, and the tea party “Patriots”, are nothing more than conservatives trying to re-brand themselves.  That is not surprising really.  The fact that Feb. 6th , the day of the speech, would have been Ronald Reagan’s 99th birthday was referenced at least 7 times in the speech and the talk afterwards.  Mr. Reagan was praised like a god.

Sarah referenced Reagan’s “shining city on the hill”.  I happen to remember that time as being a bad one for America.  New York was riddled with crime.  The big cities of America were in bad shape.  It was the era of crack and burgeoning inner city crime.  The crime and drug problems that this nation had, when it was at its worst, were when this nation was Reagan’s “Shining city on the Hill”, and anyone who tells you different is either in the employ of, or under the influence of, the right wing main stream media.

So when I hear of Reagan, I don’t think pretty thoughts about America in it’s prime.  I see America as it shouldn’t be.  You can talk all you like about the current administration’s spending being out of control, and the current administration being out of touch because of the spending, but this administration would not be in the position it is in right now without the excesses of conservatism and of men like Ronald Reagan.

A liberal flag

And when neocons and the right wing main stream media tell me that they have a vision of America, I really have to laugh.  We have seen this vision played out, and we are suffering the results of it.  And if Sarah and the Tea Party “Patriots” want that era back, they’ll have to do it with the knowledge that they themselves, and those who believe as they do, are responsible for the bleak economic world we are living in.

And there is a reason I put  “Patriots” in quotes.  Conservatives do not have a corner on the Patriotism market, never have, never will.  There are very patriotic liberals, and i dare say the average liberal is at least as patriotic as the average conservative, and I challenge you to prove me wrong.  We on the left have something in common with the right as far as patriotism goes, we care about our country, we care about the future of America, and we want to make sure that this country is strong enough to ensure our future and the future of our children and our children’s children.  We, both liberal and conservative, are soldiers, we are laborers, we are the backbone of America.  But we have differences.

Liberals do not hide behind the flag and spout platitudes about love of country, while fighting against the freedom we claim to love so much.  No liberal has ever tried the subtle subterfuge of getting the constitution amended to make flag burning and gay marriage unconstitutional.  No real American would willingly ban free speech or the ability to marry to anyone.   Remember that bit in the pledge of allegiance?

“With liberty and justice,  for all.”  Notice it doesn’t say “for some” or “for whoever we want to have it”  ALL.

The tea party “patriots” and Sarah Palin and the rest of the old guard conservatives masquerading as some new force on the scene need to learn that.  We are ALL Americans.

Have a good night.  Get a good nights sleep and get ready to watch the Super bowl.

Today’s nuggets, via wikiquote:   The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil Constitution, are worth defending at all hazards; and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors: they purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood, and transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation, enlightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle, or to be cheated out of them by the artifices of false and designing men.  Samuel Adams

The Market lost 143.28 points, or slightly over one and a half percent today, and five percent this week after a holiday inspired bull run that recession-down

added around 1500 points since around thanksgiving, in large part due to concerns that the global recession is worsening, fed by economic data on the Jobs front.

There is the ongoing Blagojevich story.  The happiest governor on earth was impeached by the Illinois State legislature today, and what does the man do? He holds a press conference, references the golden rule, and quotes Alfred Lord Tennyson.    You know, I can get behind those last two things.  Tennyson is cool, and the Golden rule is something we should all follow, but when placed in the context of the man and the events surrounding the Senate seat that he tried to sell, it rings just a little hollow, ya know?   It’s good that he reads the classics and know what is taught in Sunday school, but it is the application of those lessons into everyday life that this man needs to work on a bit more.  It is not enough to know the words.  The meanings must be understood, lived by, and applied in everyday life.  He clearly missed that part.

And can I get a BURRIS FOR SENATE from anyone out there?  Anyone?

Then we have Sarah Palin intruding into our world once again.   In a nine minute video with the words “” splashed across the bottom, she rails against the media.  That media also would seem to include bloggers who said that she was not the mother of her youngest son.  Look we all knew that wasn’t the case, and that she was the mother from day one.  We aren’t stupid.  But she claims to still be getting phone calls at her office about this.

I get phone calls from idiots too, but usually they are trying to sell me crap I don’t need.  Lucky me, I guess. Maybe Governor McCheese needs to do whuscurrency_federal_reserveat I do.  Let the calls go to the answering machine.  Then delete everything you don’t want or need.  Hmm … Maybe they don’t teach governors how to use phones properly in Alaska. 😛

The Judge in the Bernard Madoff case will rule Monday whether the rotten crooked thieving bastard can continue to stay out on bail or whether he actual gets to cool his heels in an 8 x 10 cell.  There had better be a jail cell waiting for this evil bastard, or there had better be armed violent anger in the area heavy enough to warrant suspending habeas corpus for a few days if he stays only under house arrest.  If he can stay out after mailing over $1,000,000 in jewels and valuables to family and friends in direct violation of his bond, someone needs a severe ass whipping, and not just Bernie Madoff.

Just in case you thought the shooting was over, seeing how it’s not really being covered anymore, or not nearly as much as it was last week, they’re still going at it in the Gaza Strip.  Israel and Egypt are far apart on plans for a cease fire, and Ehud Olmert says the U.N. Security council resolution calling for an immediate cease fire is unworkable.

Love? Peace? In the Middle east?  LOL….Not in this world, they’ll shoot each other until they run out of ammo or people to shoot.  And new people and ammo show up daily, or at least it seems that way, doesn’t it?

That’s about it from me.  A viddy, a few quotes, and I am done.

Then some one spake: “Behold! it was a crime Of sense avenged by sense that wore with time.”  Another said: “The crime of sense became
The crime of malice, and is equal blame.” And one: “He had not wholly quench’d his power; A little grain of conscience made him sour.” At last I heard a voice upon the slope Cry to the summit, “Is there any hope?” To which an answer peal’d from that high land, But in a tongue no man could understand; And on the glimmering limit far withdrawn God made Himself an awful rose of dawn.   Alfred, Lord Tennyson

       Politics in a sec.

Tired Mikey.  Hammering from noon to about 4:00pm, when seemingly everyone in the world but me is Fractalawake, kept me from sleeping well.  It was just loud enough to keep me awake, or if not exactly awake, kept me from getting fitful sleep for more than 15 minutes at a time.  Enough whining, time for politics.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I really doubt these stories about Sarah Palin not knowing that Africa was a continent, or not knowing the countries of North America.  She might have been less than a great V.P. Candidate, but NO ONE is that stupid. No one.

What this looks like to me is simple stupidity from people within the McCain campaign trying to do their best to separate themselves from the loss McCain took.  It doesn’t help when the media Latches onto a story like this and just won’t let it rest.  Wanna nail her for something she did wrong, fine, but bullshit bashing like this is wrong.  If she succeeds, let it be on her merits, if she fails let it be on her weaknesses, not on unsubstantiated reports that are nothing short of abusive, rueful, mean spirited, and nasty.

As much as I didn’t like her and the campaign she and McCain ran, she doesn’t deserve this.

Over One million jobs lost this year.  I was prognosticating about this a while back, call it a month or two ago, and said it would hit this number by years end.  Missed by two months.  I thought i was being pessimistic.  Apparently my pessimism is nothing compared to the shit the world can throw out there.  I don’t think anyone was expecting unemployment to be at 6.5% at this point.  I have heard numbers as bad as 8% and even 10% before the crisis finally abates in late 2009, but that was when those numbers were at 5.5% unemployment, half a million jobs lost, and the man making those guesses on bloomberg radio seemed from my perspective to be a bit too damned gloomy.

1114    Not anymore.  Now I am seeing regular job loss estimates in the 8% range, and one particularly gloomy forecast, from IHS Global Insight, that says that job losses will average 200,000 per month for the rest of this quarter and all of next quarter.  The economy is hemorrhaging right now and we are losing 120,000 a month on average.  Just Imagine the joy of losing an extra 80,000 jobs on top of that for a half a year.  Even better.  DON’T.  Read the article in Question here.

Let us all hope that our  President-Elect can pull this economy out of these doldrums and fix  this mess, if that’s possible.  I voted for him, in part, because i think he can get the economy back on track.  I haven’t yet read or seen any stories about the meeting he had today.  Yes I heard all about it, just haven’t gotten to seeing or reading about it yet.

I hope Timothy Gauthier gets the Treasury Secretary job.  He sounds like the best of the bunch that I’ve seen. I’ve heard a great number of other names proposed for the job, but I don’t know that I want another ex-Goldman CEO like Jon Corzine, we’ve tried that already with Paulson, who took over Goldman after ousting Corzine.  Larry Summers would actually be a pretty good pick and Paul Volcker would be a good pick as well, but at 81, might be a bit long in the tooth for the job at this point. We’ll see what happens.

A Viddy, a few quotes, and I am DONE.

Barack Obama’s first press conference as President-elect.  I’m listening to it as I am writing this.  From C-Span:

Our dangers, as it seems to me, are not from the outrageous but from the conforming; not from those who rarely and under the lurid glare of obloquy upset our moral complaisance, or shock us with unaccustomed conduct, but from those, the mass of us, who take their virtues and their tastes, like their shirts and their furniture, from the limited patterns which the market offers.  Learned Hand

Anagram: You Can’t Beat Us/Taco By Aunt Sue

I had to use this anagram.  I just spent the last few hours flipping between a few shows one of them was a hockey game, The New York Rangers Vs. The New Jersey Devils.  The Game, On MSGHD was Ripping Goodness(Love the new HDTV, Love, Love LOVE it!).  Henrik Lundqvist has The Devils number so far, His career Numbers against them is 13-2-4, all versus Martin Brodeur.  Rangers won 4-1, with two goals, including the Game winner in the second, by Aaron Voros, and two points, 1 Goal and 1 assist By Brandon Dubinsky.  The Rangers fans had fun with the Devils at the end of the game.  The Chant from The Garden Faithful rang loud and clear, and I could not help but laugh out loud when I heard it.  “YOU CAN’T BEAT US . . … YOU CAN’T BEAT US”   It was GREAT!  The Rangers are now 5-0, tying their best season start in a quarter century.

Beautiful.  Keep up the good work fellas, and LET’S GO RANGERS!

One more hockey note to pass on, this one far more somber.  Alexei Cherepanov, a 19 year old Rangers Prospect,  died of a heart attack at a game in the Russian continental league today.  He had fallen on the ice during his last shift, and was talking to Jaromir Jagr on the bench after a shift when he collapsed. After a few frantic minutes trying to revive him on the bench, they took him to the locker room, where He had apparently been revived, but The Ambulance that usually stays at games had left, and took 15-20 minutes to return to the arena, and the defibrillators there had problems. He was pronounced dead later on in the day at the as yet unnamed hospital.  Click here to read the story.

Alexei Cherepanov, dead at 19.  January 15, 1989 – October 13, 2008    Rest In Peace.

A moment of silence, then onto other things.

Business news: The Dow Jones Industrial Average went up an Amazing 11.08% today, 936.42 points ahead of the it’s previous close, and at one point was up over 40 points more than that.  The Nasdaq Composite was up an equally amazing 11.81% , 194.74 points higher than it’s start number.  The S&P 500 was up 11.38% or 104.13 points.  Is this the beginning of a stock market turnaround? I’m hoping so, but I tell you i am still expecting rough days ahead, there’s still too much bad debt out there but things look good right now, and let’s hope that this helps minimize the effect of the Mortgage based debt that dragged the system down last week.  More Good news.  As of 10:02 p.m.,  Dow Futures are up 185 points.  Nice.

Let’s hope the news stays positive.

Political news, Slightly silly stuff as well.  Sarah Palin apparently mistook some zealous fans of hers for Hecklers.  Apparently there were a fair number of people out there and not everyone could hear her, and the Chant, “Louder, Louder” came from the back of the crowd.  But those in the front, and Misses Palin herself mistook the people in the cheap seats for hecklers and told them:

I hope those protesters have the courage and honor to give veterans thanks for their right to protest.

Well, I for one hope that either the McCain people get a proper sound system, or that Mrs. Palin get her hearing checked.   Some people in the crowd tried to tell here what was going on, but it fell on deaf ears. Things otherwise went off without a hitch.

Now a video: Fun with Penn Gillette.  A man whom I admire making a valid point about big government and people who are advocates thereof by asking a question.  Watch and enjoy.  BTW Penn, Yer hair is pretty dude, relax. Really.

That’s about it for me.  Later!

Today’s Nuggets, Via Wikiquote :  I’ll show you politics in America. Here it is, right here. “I think the puppet on the right shares my beliefs.” “I think the puppet on the left is more to my liking.” “Hey, wait a minute, there’s one guy holding out both puppets!” “Shut up! Go back to bed, America. Your government is in control. Here’s love connection. Watch this and get fat and stupid. By the way, keep drinking beer, you fucking morons.   Bill Hicks
