Would

The crowning fortune of a man is to be born to some pursuit which finds him employment and happiness, whether it be to make baskets, or broadswords, or canals, or statues, or songs.

Would you hire me?  I have over 22 years of experience working in copy centers at law firms, including nearly 5 years of supervisory experience. I have worked night shift, day shift, compressed shifts, this shows that I am willing to work when needed, as true now as it was when I was working at those jobs.  I have worked in places far and near.  I worked for several years on weekends, giving up my football seasons, weekends with my wife.  All this shows that I am a dedicated employee.

So why can’t I find a job?  Why will no one hire me?

Is it the Job market, which is still not at 100% making it more difficult for me to work? Is it  the line of work, has it shrunk so much that they simply no longer hire?  Is it me? My resume?   Am I not trying hard enough? That last one I can answer.  I send resumes all over the place, I send them to places that are hiring, on occasion to places that aren’t, just so they can have my resume on file.  I send it to agencies.  The one thing I haven’t tried doing is simply walking into places of business with resume in hand, seeing if they need anyone.

I’m not sure that I’d get by security if I tried to do that, the way things are nowadays.

Maybe I don’t interview well.  Maybe it’s my age, or the amount of experience I have.  Maybe they don’t want to hire me because I have many years of experience, and would command a somewhat hefty salary, in a job pool where employers do try to keep pay as low as possible.  They do that with a high turnover rate, you don’t have to pay people a lot if they aren’t there long.

I am merely speculating.

So why don’t I have a job?  I really don’t know.  I wish I did.

Any help on the job hunt from you, dear reader, would be greatly appreciated.

So, what have I been doing to fill my time? Looking for work, which takes several hours a day, regardless of what exactly I’m doing to find work.   I’ve been here writing, but that doesn’t take up that much time.  The longer posts take about an hour and a half, shorties like yesterday’s take all of 10 minutes.

Running and working out takes some time out.  Even with my shorter than normal runs I am doing now because of my less than perfect right ankle, a fair chunk of time is taken up with sweat.  It takes 10 minutes or so to walk to the run start spot, my daily run takes only about a ½ hour at this point, and another 10 minutes or so to walk back home.  I take time post run and pre workout to write here on the running commentary page.  There’s 10 minutes.  Workout is between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on how hard the workout is.

I am now watching tv shows, instead of just politics and sports.  My wife has a netflix account, and for the last few weeks I’ve been watching  either Spartacus: Blood and Sand, or Ren and Stimpy, or the documentary Freakonomics, the occasional stand up act, Bill Hicks, Lewis Black stuff like that.  That’s for about an hour a day.  I cook. I eat, more than I should.  I drink coffee, lots of it.  I eat really unhealthy food. Gonna work on fixing that starting tomorrow.  I’ve even been known to sleep, sometimes up to 6 hours a night, but usually a fair bit less.

Hard to sleep with this hanging over my head.

And I try to figure out new ways to find work.  That thought is the one thing that always runs through my mind.  So long as I have no job, finding one is my first priority.

That’s it from here, America.  Go to sleep, and tell your boss about how much I kick ass, maybe they’ll hire me.  G’night.
