A Day Watching News

Sometimes I look at the world and I scratch my head.

Hatred is a vice of narrow souls; they feed it with all their meanness, and make it a pretext for sordid tyranny.

Honore De Balzac

Wake up late.  Normally up before 9, slept until nearly 10, after going to sleep at 4:00 am. Make coffee, drink coffee, putter around the house, turn on the computer, go to careerbuilder, give a cursory look at the want ads for a job.  Yes, it’s Saturday, but when unemployed, look for work at all times, until employment is achieved.  Even with that said, I do allow myself a few hours a week off from the job search, but I have to give it at least something of a look, there might be something worth a resume send out there.  Nothing today tho.  So, feed cats, listen to some light music, play a few games online for 3 or 45 minutes and reading some news, time comes for the daily run.

5½ miles later, come home.  Sit down, turn on the computer.  Open a few pages up on the computer.  My running commentary, cool running pace calculator, weatherbug.  Check the pace of the run, check the numbers on the weather.  Write up the info.  Close down the pace calc. and weatherbug, open up google news.  Read the news again.

Congresswoman shot.  This is an attention grabber.  I’m curious.  Read  a few more stories. Some reports say the congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords, 40, Democrat from Arizona’s 8th district, is dead, others that she is not.  A great deal of uncertainty in the coverage.  A few things are clear, she was not the only one shot, other people have died, and she was shot in the head.

Viddy of the day:  President Obama on the Arizona attack and Rep. Giffords. President makes a mistake here that most everybody did today.  Refered to Rep. Giffords in the past tense.  Not surprising, seeing how everyone else that I saw talk about this on TV did the same thing.

How is there laughter, how is there joy, as this world is always burning? Why do you not seek a light, ye who are surrounded by darkness?

Siddhartha Gautama

Turn on the TV.  Speculation and tons of talk.  Little in the way of actual news.  Talk of who she is, what she has done, waiting for press conferences, talking to colleagues, and talk of who her family is.  Her husband is an ex-astronaut, her brother in law is in charge of things on the international space station.

Questions are asked.   What kind of security is at these meet and greets usually for a member of congress?  Who runs them? Several members of congress were asked if they felt safe.   One fact comes out which is, while surprising on one level, is very much expected on another.  There is not one single member of congress that has not been threatened with death.  Not one. Not surprising given the political environment

Press conferences are held.  Find out that a federal Judge is also killed.  The judge just decided to show up and say hello to his congresswoman.  One of her staffers and a nine year old child are dead, and 3 others are also killed, no word on who they are. The one piece of good news is that the Congresswoman is responding to commands and her prognosis is good.

The man who shot these people, who tried to kill the congressman, is a 22 year old named Jared Lee Loughner.   Motive is unknown, but word surfaces of anti-government rants on-line, of a video complaining of illiteracy in Arizona’s 8th district, of his own issues with the language, and a tenuous grip on reality.   The word unbalanced is tossed out.  Arizona is called the mecca of hatred and bigotry. The media is blamed in some way.

There is talk of a second person of interest.

Go to sleep, America.
