As societies grow decadent, the language grows decadent, too. Words are used to disguise, not to illuminate, action: you liberate a city by destroying it. Words are to confuse, so that at election time people will solemnly vote against their own interests.
Gore Vidal, The decline and fall of the American empire
There’s this guy, named Jon, who I’ve been talking to, quite extensively over the last week on line. Let me tell you what’s been going on.
He read a post of mine, on hubpages, and decided to tell me he knew better than I about the subject about which I was writing. He may well know more about taxes, per se, and the political ramifications of the Bush tax cuts, but I guess he thought I’d just roll over. Not. He pontificated, I fought back.
These are a few, but far from all the claims he made, a representative sample, if you would.
Jon claims the following: He CLAIMS The President slipped into the health care bill a provision that lets congressional staffers have their tuition completely paid for. He CLAIMS The President made a public proclamation to that effect. He CLAIMS GM is building a new $500,000,000 plant in Mexico with our money. He CLAIMS the $26,000,000,000 Medicaid/ Jobs bill was only billed as a Jobs bill, and that the President tried to slip the Medicaid part past America unawares, and that NO ONE reported the story as having medicaid money in it. He CLAIMED the bill itself didn’t even have a name.
I am being nice by not putting in all the odd rhetoric about how OBAMA’S PLAN IS TO CHANGE OUR NATION BY COLLAPSING OUR ECONOMY. Those being Jon’s exact words. Nice guy, if by nice you mean complete nutjob.
Let’s tackle the bullshit one bit at a time, shall we?
Viddy of the day: Madeliene Albright talking at the commonwealth club a few weeks ago, about who really is to blame for the heatedness of political debate these days, and I could not agree with Ms. Albright more.
BTW, if all you see above is a black (or white) box, just change browsers to something that is not IE8. Apparently as of this writing, IE8 and wordpress seem to be having issues displaying youtube viddys. I find that firefox 3.6.8 and google chrome work just fine for viddy viewing in wordpress.
We’re the most captive nation of slaves that ever came along. The moral timidity of the average American is quite noticeable. Everybody’s afraid to be thought in any way different from everyone else.
First things first, there is NO PROVISION at all like the one envisioned by Jon boy here. Not a single solitary word in the health care bill about paying for congressional staffers tuition. I pointed this out to Jon, had to show him the truth twice before he would shut up about it.
And if it isn’t there, by extension there can be no public proclamation to that effect.
Secondly, there is in fact a plant in Mexico that is getting a complete retooling. It used to make Hummers and Saturn’s and the Chevy HHR, but since the first two have gone the way of the Dodo, and the third has had it operations shifted to the United States (to my knowledge), the plant will now make new hybrid and electric engines, it needs that retooling.
The plant BTW, is in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, and has existed since 1981, and GM has had a presence in Mexico since 1935. So much for new.
And how is that money any one’s but GM’s? They are reopening plants here in the US, doing retools elsewhere to my knowledge in two other plants, and if that’s what it costs to do that, then that’s what it costs and they, being capitalists, and having capital, have the right to do it!
If the government’s tried to use leverage to control the use of GM’s money in this, they really would be acting like big brother, which is why they haven’t. The Administration is going out of it’s way to be as unobtrusive as possible, to avoid even the glimmer of impropriety.
No one likes being called a socialist.
That last bit he came up with, the SECRET MEDICAID BILL, was an absolute laugher. I’ll give him this much though, he’s got sticktoitiveness. I beat him relentlessly with the truth that the bill has been reported as a Medicaid/ Jobs bill from moment one, and he just would not let go. He threw the word propaganda around like he knew what he was doing. He ranted like a great SECRET was being kept from the American people. Silly. Showed him 5 different links from sources from the left and right, and all of it straight news, not commentary.
But Ya know something… I don’t think he’s done. I’m kinda unhappy about it, because it takes up a fair amount of time looking up the truth here, because some of these things he’s tossed out I’ve never looked into, and real research takes time, checking and double checking source material, checking for multiple sources to ensure the story I’m getting I’m getting without some political filter attached to it.
But it’s fun showing this man the truth, when he thinks he’s just going to get away with tossing lies and bullshit at me, like I’m just going to stand there and take it.
That’s it from here, America. Have a good night, I’ll write to you again tomorrow.
