I would really like to, just for one day, feel like the world isn’t full of idiots. It would really be nice. But It seems destined to not happen. Thought I had a good day lined up. Wake up (always a good way to start the day off), feed the cats some mixed grill, which is a flavor they like, and rarely if ever barf back up, or snub, have half a pot of coffee and some (product name deleted) cakes (fcuk’em, they ain’t paying me, I ain’t advertising for’em), look for a job for a few hours (maybe even talk to someone), read a little news, catch up on the happenings of the world, take pain killers, stretch, run, cool down, workout, look for work a bit more, shower, make dinner, relax.
You see where I goofed, right? Read a little news… Why do I do it. It’s an addiction I guess. Here’s the source of the twitching. A Virginia state delegate by the name of Bob Marshall made a comment on Thursday, a real doozy. At a press conference that day, where he was urging that planned parenthood be stripped of funding, said that women who have abortions, who abort their first born, are punished by God with handicapped children later.
In other words, disabled children are a punishment for prior abortions.
He apologized today to the parents of disabled children. And yet he did also say that he meant what he said to representatives of the Rachel Maddow show today.
No word of an apology to the rest of the population of the planet, who are in need at the very least of an explanation of last weeks epic face palm moment. Now, I must be serious for the moment and say that I am sure he didn’t mean to be a heartless schlub when he uttered his stupidity, but it must, i think, show something of the true content of his heart. If it isn’t in you, it can’t come out, can it? If you don’t think it, you can’t say it,right? Not in that way, not in that light. Somewhere in that mind of his, lurks that dark thought that down syndrome, autism and the like really IS a punishment on the mother and father if the mother had an abortion. He can hide behind facts and studies, he can talk all he wants about studies he can point to, to make his points fit his thoughts. He can apologize all he wants, we have already seen his dark heart. We know you for who you are, Bob. Don’t think the people of Virginia will forget.
More joy from Virginia. The states new Governor Robert F. McDonnell has signed an executive order barring workplace discrimination for everyone.
Protections once given, which can then be taken away, prove a very simple point. Rights aren’t rights, they are priveleges, handed out by the states and federal government. They are only rights when we have them, in writing, on the books, in unambiguous language and are untouchable by any interference, such as that which was just handed down from on high by the new governor of Virginia. When they are taken away, if you are part of the affected population, your so called rights disappear. You may as well not exist.
And if he can take rights away from one portion of the population with the swipe of a pen on paper, can he not do it to another? Does that not imply that any state or federal executive can do exactly the same thing to anyone?
Yes it does.
Now that statement comes with a caveat. Those in power understand that they won’t be in power long if they go after powerful groups, which is why you almost never see serious and severe restrictions on large voting blocs, or the interests of the majority of any particular population. Meaning those who are voiceless, or those with little political clout are the ones who find themselves under the gun like homosexuals do in Virginia.
Rich people? safe. Corporations? safe. Males? safe. Women? Hmmmm… i dunno, I’d normally say so, but with women still making less then men, I can say not safe here and make an argument that has real meat on its bones. African American? I cannot judge, I’m not black, I just don’t know, but if I had to guess I’d say on some fronts yes, on others no. But this thread sounds like fodder for an entire article unto itself.
I’ll save the rest for later then.
And now for something completely different… two viddies that have nothing to do with either politics or Virginia. Just a great big bunch of silly. Well, maybe a little politics, Sam the eagle, after all, is THE Republican muppet:
OH NOES! BURNINATION!!!!!! This viddy gives me lulz, many mass multiple lulz.
Today’s nuggets, by several prominent Virginians, via wikiquote: I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty, than those attending too small a degree of it. Thomas Jefferson
Government is not reason, it is not eloquence — it is force! Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action. George Washington
Suspicion is a virtue as long as its object is the public good, and as long as it stays within proper bounds. … Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect every one who approaches that precious jewel. Patrick Henry
