Sometimes I go through the news and I find a story that i really empathize with, that touches me. I
found one in The Daily News, A local New York City Paper. There is a man named Louis Kenny, from Queens, who is calling for a one day boycott of the Metropolitan Transit Authority, next June 9th, around the day a new fare hike is supposed to go into effect. I am with brother Louis here. It is a Tuesday, an off day for me, so not using any MTA buses or subways is no issue for me. I could even join the boycott on the next workday for me. No worries. He says there are better ways for the TA to get the money they need, and I agree. How he wants to go about it needs some work though. He wants to increase the prices on advertising and create a fare for the Staten Island ferry.
Increasing the advertising prices will just scare away the lower end advertisers. Creating a fare for the S.I. Ferry will create a two fare zone for an entire borough. That was the reason it was done away with in the first place. Queens has no such two automatic two fare zone. Brooklyn has no such automatic two fare zone, nor does The Bronx, nor does Manhattan.
If you want the always increasing price of a fare to stop there is, to my mind, only one way to make that happen, with legislation. Legislation that says that retaining the fare where it is shall be mandated for X amount of time, in perpetuity if possible. Legislation that has as its centerpiece the Idea that the people are not the ones making the mistakes, and that we should therefore not be the ones to pay for it. How do you pay for it? Pay freezes for all TA employees. Bus drivers and train conductors for example, make more after three years than cops do after 3 years on the force, and more than Firemen do after 3 years in the department. Restructure the entire TA, from the Top down. Cut pay for TA executives.
We the people of the City of New York are being held hostage, we are tired of it and we need that to end, regardless of how it happens. Don’t balance your budget on my back. That happens too much as it is. Let Touissant and the TA bigwigs pay for it themselves if they want to balance the budget. It is not up to us to pay for them or their business.
I think the Idea of a boycott is a great one. These bastards have been trying to fleece us for years, and
they have largely gotten away with it, due to the power of the Union. Those who remember a few years ago when Roger Toussaint held the entire city hostage for a pay increase around Christmas knows the power these idiots have over us. That power needs to be reigned in. The Only way to reign it in is with legislation. Making me pay more will only make them try to get more in other ways from us. We need to slay the dragon once and for all, not just placate the fat bastard.
If the law mandates them to have a balanced budget, then the law can mandate an alternative to making us pay for it. We have paid far too much for far too long, and it is time for this to stop!
NO MORE BULLSHIT! Anyone who reads this and is from the NYC area should write their congressman or woman, their state senator, and anyone else they can think of and Yell until you are blue in the face, and tell them…
WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH! NO MORE FARE HIKES! EVER!
A viddy before I go, from the Daily news on the proposed fare hike.
That’s it for me. Later!
